Permanent Mission of Panama to the United Nations

Welcome to the Home Page of the Permanent Mission of Panama to the United Nations!

The Mission is in charge of representing Panama in the everyday affairs of the world's most representative body. Supported by a team of well-trained professionals, the Mission advances Panama's foreign policy regarding the multilateral matters brought to the United Nations for their debate and decision-making. We are a dependency of Panama's Ministry for Foreign Affairs, which oversees all foreign policy matters for Panama.

Panama is a founding member of the United Nations and has remained active in its affairs. To date, our country has been a non-permanent member of the Security Council five times, between 1958-1959, 1972-1973, 1976-1977, 1982-1983 and today for the period 2007-2008. Panama was also a member of ECOSOC in the periods of 1966-1968, 1986-1988 and 2004-2006.

Part of the international debate that contributed to the country's achieving full sovereignty over the Panama Canal took place within the United Nations. One of the most significant events in that regard was the meeting of the Security Council in Panama City, Panama, in March 1973, one of only seven times in which that body has met outside its Headquarters.

Within the United Nations, Panama also participates in the Central American Integration System (SICA), the Rio Group, the Non-Aligned Movement and the Group of 77.
